Lighting the Way at 3:30 AM: Data-Center Traffic Control in Memphis
At 3:30 in the morning the lot is dark, the road is quiet, and the first trucks are already lining up. That is when our Memphis crew clocks in.
This October, The Parking Guys begin daily traffic control in Memphis, Tennessee. TPG provides traffic control and parking services at a major AI data-center campus in Memphis. Pre-dawn and evening shifts, seven days a week.
- Morning shift: before sunrise, ahead of the first wave
- Evening shift: through the evening shift change
- Coverage: 7 days a week
Why data-center traffic is different
A data center is not a concert. There is no single gate time and no crowd that leaves together. Traffic comes in waves that follow shift changes, deliveries and construction crews. The waves start before sunrise.
Dark hours, real risk
Most of our morning shift runs in the dark. Drivers are tired. Headlights glare. A lane that is obvious at noon disappears at 4 AM. That is why every attendant works lit, visible and in position before the first vehicle turns in.
Shift change is the pinch point
The evening window is a two-way problem. One crew is leaving while the next is arriving. Without control at the entry, both queues back onto the public road. Our job is to keep the lanes moving and the road clear.
Meet the Memphis crew
This is a local Memphis crew, led by Earl Harden, TPG's Memphis Market Manager. Earl runs the schedule, the post assignments and the daily standard on both lots.
Local matters. Our people know the roads, the weather and the morning commute. They live here. They show up on time because they are not driving in from another state.
What we bring
Every post runs on the same kit and the same rules.
On the lane
- Lighted batons for every attendant on dark-hour posts
- Flags for daylight direction and lane holds
- High-visibility vests on every person, every shift
- Radios so both lots and the entry talk in real time
Behind the lane
- GPS-verified clock-ins in the TPG app. Every attendant clocks in on site, so coverage is proven, not promised.
- Weekly traffic reviews. We look at what happened on the lots each week and adjust posts and timing.
Next stop: Texas
Data-center construction is moving fast across the South, and Texas is next. Public reporting points to new gigawatt-scale projects around Austin, Bastrop and Conroe. We wrote up what that means for site traffic: Data Center Construction Traffic Control in Texas.
